— Shrub confronting Xornoth , episode 17

Shrub is the gnomish ruler of the Undergrove, a small mushroom-themed kingdom located in the forest hills.

Appearance[]

Shubble, often called Shrub wears an almost mint green, off-the-shoulder shirt with long sleeves, pale brown overalls, and mushroom patterned socks. On her head, she wears what seems to be a kind of hat that matches the footwear's pattern. She has a band-aid on her left leg as well. As far as her physical appearance goes, she has yellow eyes and long, dark brown, almost black hair. She is also very pale. Shrub's elytra are white, with the top of it patterned like the red & white mushrooms.

As the wolf spirit, Shrub makes a great change in appearance, going from her normal cottage core green and mushrooms patterns to mostly dark colors. The outfit consists of a teal shirt with long sleeves and short green pants, as well as finger-less gloves and boots with cyan shoelaces. On top of everything, she wears a dark green hood matching the pant's color and the signature grey kitsune-like wolf mask with glowing green eyes.

It has been confirmed that shrub is canonically 4'3" ft (about 130 cm) which makes her disguise slightly ironic as people have been able to tell her identity by her height several times.

Unique items[]

Shrub carries a special bow that holds the souls of all the skeletons she's killed.[1]

Her hat flows down her back like a cloak that ends in ladybug wings coming out from underneath.[3]

She carries a custom mushroom shovel, mushroom axe, and a giant leaf shield.[5]

History[]

Shrub came from another land, looking for a cure to a curse that plagued her home.

Her late entry to the land of Empires was welcomed with gifts and open arms by the other rulers.

Eventually, she becomes The Wolf Spirit in order to protect her lands from Xornoth. This also carries onto post-Xornoth esmp s1, using her apparent abilities to find the crown. She also runs away as the Wolf Spirit after a bout of imposter syndrome.

It has also been confirmed that the Evermoore of S2 is Shrub’s old home.

Empire[]

For more details about her empire, visit the Undergrove.

Shrub's empire is called the Undergrove and is located in the forest hills. She has gone for a general mushroom & forest-inspired cottagecore vibe for most of her builds, with several hobbit hole-like villager soon-to-be villager homes as well as a big colorful mushroom castle with multiple levels for her to live in.

The empire's main exports consist of nether-based building materials such as warped and crimson stems, as well as shroomlights and different kinds of mushrooms.

Relationships[]

Relationships with Others
Name Status Notes
Katherinehead1
Katherine
Positive After receiving a flower build from Katherine, Shubble became friendly with her, later initiating a trade relationship. Giving up warped and crimson stems for various flowers that can be turned into the dye needed for the construction of her home. Katherine is the first person Shrub chooses to talk to when she gets scared that Xornoth is trying to escape from her capture, and also the person she chooses to give the crown too before leaving her empire to live in the forest with her wolves, stating that "She (Shrub) is not fit to rule anybody, but she knows someone who is"
Scotthead1
Scott
Positive Scott was one of the first people Shrub met upon joining the server when he dropped off to give her a bed and some armor to make her start easier. Scott was also one of Shrub's official allies. During the final battle, Scott was one of the two people who went to free Shrub from Xornoth's cage, which further solidified their alliance. Shrub has stated in her streams that she considers Scott her closest friend and ally on the server. Even after she was told by fWhip that Scott is untrustworthy, she was naive enough to believe that Scott freezing her pond and leaving ice spikes by her empire was only a way of holiday decorations. When she learned about Scott's self-exile from fWhip, they decide to let her keep the crystal for it to be safe. She eventually gave back Xornoth's crystal because she kept on getting hallucinations and nightmares.
Xornothhead
Xornoth
Very Negative Shrub is one of the two people whom Xornoth has a large connection before the start of the events in the SMP. Before Xornoth was alive, his predecessors, Exor and Cohnal, were banished to another world from the elf world. That world was the gnome's world. Exor and Cohnal started corrupting the land and then Xornoth came into existence. Instead of Exor and Cohnal, Xornoth was the one who fully corrupted the gnome's civilization, which led Shrub to investigate where it came from in the Overworld. Xornoth and Shrub had a back-and-forth chase which ended in the final battle. When Scott exiled himself after accidentally freezing Gem, he left everything including Xornoth's crystal. fWhip, learning about the crystal's whereabouts, decides to let Shrub keep it for safe keeping. Xornoth, while inside the crystal, always lets Shrub sleepwalk and go back to the Undergrove's mining tunnel entrance wherever she is. After having way too much, she decides to give the crystal back to Scott.

Trivia[]

  • The character's full name, Shrub Berry is a pun on the word shrubbery.
  • Shrub is 116 years old, which is a teenager in gnome years.
  • Shrub is the shortest member of the first season, with a height of 4'3" (130 cm). This is average for a gnome.
  • Shubble has mentioned that he/she pronouns "feel right" for Shrub.[6]
  • Shrub has mentioned that she has a fear of water and has no ability to swim. It's something she works on throughout the series.
  • Joey sometimes calls her "fungus" or "fungus girl" as an insult. She doesn't seem to like this nickname.
  • Shrub can understand and speak to wolves and it does not seem to be limited to only her wolves, as she once let other rulers tame wolves in their empires as a way for Shrub to spy on them.
  • Shubble named Shrub's father Fern Berry and described him as a large, round man with a thick New York accent who gave big mobster vibes. He was also bald with a moustache and big eyebrows so you can't see his eyes. Her mother was named Rose Berry. She also calls Shrub "a farmer's daughter."[7]
  • Very few of the other emperors recognize Shrub as The Wolf Spirit, whether this is just because they don’t know, or that they don’t really care is unknown. A few emperors do remark on Shrubs rule and how unusual it seemed.

Quotes[]

When it all started, the corruption rolled in, like a fog in the early morning. But it choked out all life. We survive off our fungus, it's our life force. It's not supposed to be able to die so easily. But it didn't really die... It changed. Everything turned crimson red and smelled of blood. My people started... changing. They became twisted, furious at each other. They turned on one another. I was only a farmer's daughter; I didn't know what to do. Everyone became corrupted but me. But somehow I escaped. I still don't remember how it happened. I was running for so long. But one day, I fell into this realm, it seems. I closed my eyes, blacked out maybe, and here I was. And my people were gone. I wonder, with Xornoth gone and the corruption receded, what's become of my people? Might they be cured too? If only I knew how to get back. I said I left to find a cure but never admitted to anyone, I'm not sure how to find them again anyway. I've been lost. I'm the last gnome.

— Shrub reflecting on her past after the defeat of Xornoth , episode 21

The dreams... the voices... the hallucinations... None of it was real? It was all in my head? Xornoth really is gone and so is all the corruption but my home... It's too far gone. It can't be saved. That was my last hope! None of my people are left. There's nothing to go back for. I worked so hard to build my home again, but it's a lie. None of it's real. I don't have a home. I don't have any people. I don't have any family. I don't belong here. These aren't my things. This isn't my house. This isn't my bed. This isn't my castle. None of this- none of this really belongs to me. It was never meant for me. I was never a ruler. Was never royalty. I'm just nobody.

— Shrub after discovering that she has been imagining Xornoth coming back and having a breakdown over how there is no hope left for her people , episode 25
